The purpose of our genius hour project was to better our footballs practice equipment. We wanted to raise money for a new single man blocking sled.
To begin the process to raise money for this cause we started off going the wrong direction and ended up getting ahead of ourselves. We started off by finding the blocking sled we wanted then we went and set up a go fund me and that's where we got ahead of ourselves. We had forgotten to talk to our athletic direct to see if he was planning on getting one or if he already had the funds to get another one. After talking to him we realized we needed to do some more research.
We went back to our class a little bummed out that we couldn't go ahead with this until we did our research on the best blocking sled available and how much that would end up costing him. We told him that we didn’t want to get our school booster club to help us and we thought we could’ve done it on our own.
We were surprised on how wrong we were. We had a very hard time finding anyone who was willing to help us out. Are go fund me never really got any money for it and asking other to donate wasn’t going well either. It was extremely hard to find any money to put towards this.
I learned that it was not easy to find people willing to donate for our cause. I also learned that you have to know what you want and price of how to get it and where you're getting it from before you go to the school asking for the approval on you getting this for the school. Even though they would like to see the sled come into the football program they don't want to see us collect money for something that we might not be able to get. And then have money we collect from other just sitting there. They want to know that we would be able to raise enough money to buy it and have the proper means of getting it.
I ended up sharing what I learned by mainly word of mouth to others. I told them that you need a very well thought out plan to approach the school with but don’t get your hopes up with that because they if there is any hole in it they will find it and want you to fix it before they give you the go ahead. I also shared what I learned on my genius hour blog page. But i gave out more information by word of mouth.
The first thing I would have done is went to the school with a better plan on how to get the money needed for the blocking sled. This would have helped me out tremendously in speeding up this process and maybe even accomplishing the goal of getting one.
The second thing I would change would be that i would explore better ways of fundraising. I would have taken a lot more of my time and invested it into looking at a better way to raise money for this because i would not have done the gop fund me because it's hard for people to find and the few that do find it not everybody will pitch in money to help the cause.
I think when were were giving time to work on this there wasn’t a lot accomplished but it was hard to make a lot of progress when your only being giving an hour a week so you had to use your time wisely. I Think having to do the blog post also slowed down the process of accomplishing my goal.
By the end of the year we were ready to approach the school again with how the money was going to get raised how much the sled was, but by this time in the year it might be a little late. Hopefully next year if I have genius hour I could pick up where I left off and continue to try and better the khs football team.
